Colemill Executive II
Continental IO-550 Conversion
600hp

(Click on above image to see full sized image)

The Colemill IO-550 Executive II conversion is a $114,000 modification. The 300 HP IO-550 delivers much better performance than the IO-520 conversion.

The IO-550 is also approved for continuous operation at the 300 hp rating, and also approved for lean of peak operations.

The IO-550 Conversion gives near turbo performance without the expense of the turbo system. Recently, this plane was speed tested at 7,500 feet , max manifold pressure, and 2500 RPM, which produced 207 knots true airspeed!!!!

<>The following quote is from an article titled Colemill Foxstar Baron: A Better Baron? by Peter A. Bedell, AOPA magazine Sept 2000:

"The IO-520 is a good engine, but it was not built under the minimum-horsepower concept like the newer IO-550. Under this rule, the IO-550 must produce at least 300 hp plus 10 percent and minus zero percent. The 520 can be within plus or minus 10 percent of 285 hp. That means that with all of its accessories dragging it down, an IO-550 will deliver the full 300 hp (and probably more) for a net horsepower increase better than the 30 hp total listed on the specifications sheet. Not surprisingly, owners who've made the conversion see cruise speeds of their airplanes increase by 10 knots or so. In addition there are proportional gains in takeoff and climb performance."

The IO-470 which is the original engine in this plane was certificated in the same era, and thus will have the same types of deficiencies as the IO-520.

There is also a good article showing the merits of the IO-550 engine which was written on the Atlantic Aero IO-550 conversion for the Cessna 210.

    • 758 Hours Since Colemill Conversion (Factory Remanufactured Engines)
    • Propellers- 758  Hours Since Factory New (3 Blade) including new polished spinners and factory new governors
NOTE: The right engine recently developed a slight seep at the front main seal. Testing revealed slightly high crankcase pressure even though compressions were solid.  The right engine now has a fresh top overhaul.  All six cylinders were bored (not just honed!) and new pistons and rings installed.  This top end was $9,000 and is nearly broken in at this point.  In the break-in, at 7500 feet with max MP and 2500 RPM on a warm day, this plane showed a true airspeed of 207 knots!!!!!!!!

Paint & Interior

Paint was done in the mid 1990's, Navy Blue and Silver on base Matterhorn White. This plane has been hangared, paint was done in Imron, and is in very good condition.

Interior was done in the late 1990's in pale grey leather.  Front seats have recently been recovered in matching leather.  All glass has been replaced in the last several years with new (The pictures above do not show the new glass - new glass is grey tint rather than the original Cessna blue-green tint).
